Great Exuma is the largest of the approximately 360 islands in the Bahamas. Low-lying, sandy islands and smaller neighbors are also known as "cays." The Tropic of Cancer passes through the district. Great Exuma is about thirty-seven miles long. The largest town on the island is named George Town, after the British King George III, and contains a population of a little under one thousand people.
