The Oregon Film Industry Continues To Attract Producers
Movie goers in California, New York, California and even Canada get a thrill when they screen movies that have landmarks they know, Often they whisper, I know that place. Tourists love visiting the movie sites and enjoying the excitement of being where famous movies have been filmed.
Outside of the state of Oregon, it may be not be well known yet, but folks in Oregon often whisper the same words while watching a film or TV show. The Oregon film industry has been growing for many years. Many feature films have been shot in Oregon as well as scores of television shows and hundreds of commercials. The Shining is a film based on Stephen Kings third novel of the same name. The movie starred Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. Whether the film is a study of madness or of the paranormal is open to argument. However it is considered one of director Stanley Kubricks great achievements and a great performance by Nicholson. Exterior shots of the Overlook Hotel were shot at Timberline Lake at Mt. Hood, Oregon.
National Lampoons Animal House; filmed in and around the University of Oregon, was his first and still best college comedy starring John Belushi.
Without Limits, also filmed extensively at the University of Oregon. Of course, this is a film that the University is proud to own up to. Venerable Hayward Field was repainted with the Universitys old color scheme for the track scenes. Other footage includes Coos Bay, Springfield and Eugene.
The Goonies was Completely filmed in Oregon. This nutty cult classic has many prominent Oregon landmarks that include Flavel House in Astoria, the Clatsop County Jail, Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach and Warren Field.
The Western, Rooster Cogburn; almost as stirring as the performances of John Wayne and Katherine Hepburn are the panoramic scenes shot at Grants Pass, the Rogue River and Deschutes National Forest.
Drug Store Cowboy movie was filmed solely in Portland. It was an important film in the development of actor Mat Dillons career.
Free Willy was shot in Cannon Beach, Astoria and Portlands Oaks Park. The films thrilling climax was filmed at Hammond Mooring Basin. This film was the beginning of a world wide effort to free a whale. Though there was a sequel, it was filmed elsewhere.
One Flew Over The Cuckoo Nest was filmed at Oregon State Mental Hospital in Salem, Oregon. The film was a smash with movie goers and critics and swept the 1976 Academy Awards.
