Traveling abroad is one of the most exciting things you can do. Going to a country you've never gone to before can be a wonderful experience. Even better is going to a country where you don't speak the language. That can really get you to dig deep inside yourself and find out what you are made of. Of course, traveling to another country can create a lot of anxiety and stress. Not all countries are the same. You could get into trouble. However, by following some simple guidelines, you'll be able to stay safe and have a wonderful time.

First of all, a hotel safe can be your best friend. Of course, make sure that it's secure, and make sure you have the only key. Some hotels have their safes behind the front desk, while others have them individually in each room. If you keep it in your room, then make sure you keep the key with you at all times. Don't leave it lying around when you go out sightseeing.

You should always keep your important documents handy. Things like your passport, any kind of medical ID or insurance cards, and your driver's license should be with you at all times. Before you leave, scan them and keep copies of them separately in your bag. Also, email the scanned copies to yourself, just in case. That way you'll have triple protection for your most important documents.

It's up to you if you want to go outside the normal tourist areas. Of course, if you can hear bombs going off in the distance, we wouldn't recommend it. However, if it's a relatively peaceful country, and you have some good maps and your own transportation, then why not? This can be a great way to get off the beaten path and explore things very few people will ever see.

Talking to strangers if perfect. Just beware of people who initiate conversations with you and then quickly start suggesting things to do. This will usually be some kind of tourist scam, or maybe they are interested in stealing your liver or something. Approaching them on your own is perfectly fine.

If you can, check with your bank and see if they have ATMs available in that country. If not, check and see if you can use your credit card. Short of that, carrying travelers checks is the next best thing. Just be sure to cash only the amount that you plan to use each day, so you aren't carrying too much cash. And make sure you understand the local currency, so you're not fumbling through a huge wad of cash every time you buy something. This could set you up for a mugging later on.

Traveling alone can be a great way to really experience another country. This totally depends on you. If you can handle yourself in strange and uncomfortable situations, then by all means.

There's plenty of information online about any country you wish to travel to. Also, Lonely Planet produces a wide range of books that are perfect for traveling on your own.
