The Year Round Celebrations In Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a festival country with many celebrations and festivities that occurs all the months of the year. The following are the celebrations and fiestas in Costa Rica.
In the month of January:
1. Fiestas de Palmares. This is celebrated in the first two weeks of January in Palmares de Alajuela. The festivities include concerts, rodeo shows and fireworks.
2. Fiesta Patronal de Santo Cristo. Held in the middle of January, this festival has rodeos, folk dancing and street festivals in honor of Santo Cristo de Esquipulas. The highlight is the parade of ox-carts through the main thoroughfare.
3. Festival de las Mulas. Held in the latter part of January at Playas Esterillos near Jaco. Mule races are done on the beachfront with bullfights, music concerts and fairs.
In the month of February:
1. Expo Perez Zeledon. Held in the first few weeks of February, this celebration involves cattle, horse parades, rodeos, agricultural shows and beauty contests.
2. Good Neighbors Jazz Festival. Held in the middle February in Manuel Antonio, this is a grand celebration of jazz performances and performers.
3. Carnaval de Puntarenas. Held on the coast Puntarenas, this celebration has a multitude of parades and street activities.
In the month of March:
1. Dia del Boyero. Held on the second Sunday in Escazu, highly decorated ox-carts parade through the streets of the city.
2. International Festival of the Arts. Also held on the second Sunday of the month, tourists and visitors pack the theaters of San Jose for the live music and dance performances.
3. Southern Caribbean Music Festival. Reggae and calypso concerts highlight this festival held in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca and Cahuita.
4. Semana Santa. Held during Easter week and is one of most revered holiday celebrations in the country. Many processions are held in many areas including the re-enactments of Crucifixion of Christ.
In the month of April:
1. Dia de Juan Santamaria. April 11 is the day this festival is celebrated in Alajuela. The celebration is punctuated with marching bands and beauty pageants in commemoration of Juan Santamaria, the national hero of Costa Rica.
2. Feria del Ganado. This festival is celebrated in Ciudad Quesada in the middle of the month. It is in essence the largest cattle fair in the country, aside from the rodeo shows and parades.
3. Romeria Virgen de la Candelaria. Held on the third Sunday of the month in Ujarras, this celebration commemorates the pilgrimage of the Holy Virgin as she gave protection to the town against pirates during the 1600s.
4. Semana Universitaria. Also known as Semana U, the festival is celebrated on the last week of April at the Ciudad Universitaria Rodrigo Facio in San Jose. This is the main campus of the University of Costa Rica and the grounds are host to art shows, sporting events and music concerts.
