Discovering The New Orleans Experience
The City of New Orleans boasts a rich and lively history where numerous cultures have given rise to one of the most fascinating places in the country. The unique blend of European descendants, Canadian French, West Indies African-Americans, and Native Americans have all contributed to create an amazing cuisine, original music, and hotels that once played host to the very heart of the city's social life.
The cuisine is one of the most distinct throughout the world. New Orleans is the original melting pot city of America. A variety of cultures contributed to the dishes that are unique to this locale. The Creoles were a mix of French, Spanish, and German settlers. These early Louisiana colonists brought a wide variety of cooking experiences. The Spanish brought their spices and rice. The Germans brought sausages, and the Native Americans contributed sassafras and bay leaves. The West Indies African-Americans cooked up a wonderful thick soup of vegetables that became known as gumbo. The Caribbean and French added tomato roux and beans to the blend. They combined these wonderful ingredients and gave birth to what is today known as Cajun and Creole cooking.
This southern city is known throughout the world for the amazing sounds of jazz. Its lively upbeat sounds fill the streets of the French Market. There is no more unique experience than passing by the clubs filled with laughter, dancing, and jazz playing in the background. Zydeco is another style of delightful multicultural music combinations that have ever originated in American music. It is a blend of French lyrics, German accordion, and Appalachian folk music.
Its hotels are instantly recognizable. The first recorded contemporary hotel in the city was built in 1799. From that point on, the 1800's hotels became the center of social life for 19th Century residents. More travelers of fame and infamy have stayed in one of these historic hotels. Even after the destruction of the Civil War it was not uncommon for hotels in this southern city to open their doors to defeated Confederate soldiers when most of them could not pay for their accommodations. Fires in 1788 and 1794 destroyed some of the original buildings of the city. There was a brief period of time that the Spanish ruled New Orleans. During this time, new hotels were erected that express Spanish architectural influence. The post 1800 hotels influence is evident in their beautiful courtyards and wrought iron balconies.
New Orleans is an experience in itself. It's multicultural past has given rise to a unique cuisine, entertaining music, and charming hotels that can only be found in the City of New Orleans.
