One of the most exciting things you can do as a family is take a trip together. Family trips are a great way to create some shared memories that will last a lifetime. However, some families shy away from this idea because of all the crazy logistics involved. The truth is, however, that traveling as a family can be pretty fun if you take the time to prepare. And since you are reading this article, you are about to learn how to do just that.

First of all, if you are traveling by car, take plenty of rest stops. Never expect the kids to sit quietly in the car, regardless of how many activities you've planned, for more than an hour or so. This means you've got to figure out a destination that is appropriate. It shouldn't be so far away, and the route there should have plenty of places to stop. You don't have to stop at official rest stops. Parks, McDonald's with play areas, or even the beach is a great place to stop and stretch your legs.

Since you are traveling with a lot of people, each with their own wants and desires, expect plans to change. That means you've got to be flexible, and just go with the flow. Avoid making any hotel reservations in advance, for example, and just choose places to stay based on your schedule and how it unfolds while you are traveling.

Giving kids frequent snacks is one way to keep them happy. You don't want to be hit with a bunch of kids running low on blood sugar. This would be a nightmare for everybody. Just keep the snacks small, at least partially healthy, and give them liberal amounts. Don't worry about spoiling their appetite. Just give them something to eat and have fun with it.

When you travel is very important. Usually starting in mid to late morning is ideal, and expect to wind it down no later than mid to late afternoon. Driving through the night is fine when you are jacked up on coffee and are with your buddies, but when you're with your kids, driving late into the night is counter productive.

Playing games, either in a car or a plane is essential. Card games, board games, anything that can keep them from getting board would be fine.

When you take the time to plan things out, traveling with your family can be quite an enjoyable experience. Just take plenty of time and be flexible. You'll be surprised how much fun you'll have.
