When you travel, you are doing something that most people dream about. A famous person once said that living in the world without traveling is like owning a book without reading it. No matter where you travel to, there is always some new experience that will help you to better appreciate your life back home. While there are many ways to travel, some people much prefer traveling light. That way you won't have to worry about too much, and you can be very spontaneous. In this article, you'll learn some basic tips on traveling light, so you can enjoy your next trip that much more.

First of all, take only what you need. This can be tough if you've never traveled much before. Just think about the things you use on a daily basis while you are at home. You really only need clothes, toiletries and that's pretty much it. Since you are traveling somewhere new, you really only need to add a camera and maybe a travel book or two, but that's about it. And since most hotels have laundry services, you really won't need to bring so many clothes.

You certainly don't need any soap or shampoo, as you'll find all that stuff in the hotel. Forget that special conditioner you always use. You can hit up the beauty salon when you come back.

If you are going for a few days only, then you only need one outfit for each day. There's no reason to change clothes for every meal. Since you'll be doing mostly touristy things, just relax and dress casual. Don't worry about impressing anybody.

Make sure to pack only about three quarters of your suitcase. That way when you buy new stuff, you'll have a place to store it. You don't want to carry all kinds of bags onto the plane. That would both be a huge hassle, and would make you look like a rookie tourist. Stick everything in your suitcase, and enjoy it when you get home.

If you think you'll read six novels and check your emails and update Facebook every ten minutes, think again. Maybe one or two books max, and you can update Facebook on your cell phone. No reason to use a laptop, unless it's part of a scheme to do a little work so you can write your trip off on your taxes.

Bring shoes that you can wear in a variety of situations. Don't try to bring so many shoes that you need an extra bag for them. You really only need a couple pair, if that. A comfortable pair of walking shoes, and maybe some tennis shoes in case you do some kind of sports or something.

You can pack your clothes in those vacuum packs, or you can roll them up into little balls. Either way, fold them up as much as you can before throwing them into your suitcase.

Unless you are going to some tropical jungle, you don't need any towels and sheets. Forget about those urban legends that hotels try and save money by not changing the sheets. If a hotel ever did that, they would go out of business in a hurry.

One of the biggest enemies to traveling light is the idea of "just in case." Forget it. If you don't use it every day at home, you aren't going to use it while on vacation. Just relax and enjoy yourself. If you really need something that bad, you can buy it when you get there.

When you follow these tips, you'll discover the wonder of traveling light. Pretty soon you'll be able to pack only a carry on bag for a multi-week European adventure. Have fun.
