There is nothing like a long road trip with your family to start you thinking wistfully about your single days. The whole family must sit in a cramped space for hours with nothing to do but whine and punch each other out. The silences can be long and boring. Some members think seriously about opening the car door and jumping out. Cell phones can download lots of convenient and addictive games. However, cell phone companies charge ridiculous monthly subscription rates. Even if you can afford the charges, your phone might not be up to the pressure. Constantly using your cell phone drains the battery. Your batteries should be saved for road-related emergencies. You can always sing along to the radio. Then there are songs like "99 Bottles of Beer" that tend to drive you nutsier than doing nothing at all. Turn to your fellow travelers for amusement. Don't miss spotting that aging hippie with the pony tail in the tie-dyed '67 VW Bus. Speaking of Volkswagen, they have come up with a new-beetle. Spotting any of these bugs gives you carte blanche to punch your neighbor while you holler "Punch Buggy" If that neighbor fails to come up with the response "No Punch-backs" the game can go on for eternity. Do not let the beatings get too drawn out. Any game played must come up with a victor. People want to play a game where they are given a chance at something. The winner can claim rewards like snacks, where the next stop should be, the radio station to listen to for the next hour or the right to sit in their favorite spot in the car until days end. Be careful with the driver when playing a game. One real good punch to a driver could have the lot of you swerving off the road. Safety always comes first even with competitive road games. The picnic game is worth a try. Picnic combines memory and the alphabet in a fun way that can involve the entire carload. Start by saying "I'm going to a picnic and I'm going to bring ." Then say a word that begins with the letter "A" through "Z." The trick is to come with a food whose name starts with a "u" or an "x" or any other little-used letter. The fun really begins when a player gets stumped and state they will bring whatever food they can make up in the desperate attempt to win. Sometimes while traveling scenic routes you see more livestock than people. The Cow game pits left against right when you count cows for points. Spotting a cemetery on the opposite side of your cows, clears the points that team earned. The winner with most cows gets to pick where you stop for lunch! Keep your sanity on the road by staying entertained. The destination is half the journey. Don't spend the whole ride waiting to be somewhere else. You'll end up having so much fun with these road trip games you might just keep driving!
