Many people struggle to sleep sound when they are away from home. If you are not used to being away from your own bed, then the first couple business trips you go on might be a bit rough. You are experiencing one of your first traveling trips, you have the pressure to do your job while away, and you are in strange surroundings that may not always be the most comfortable. How are you to get a good night of sleep so you are refreshed and mentally focused for work the next morning? The following tips might help:

1. Pack your own pillow and perhaps a light blanket from home.

This will add some bulk to your luggage, but it is well worth the effort if you worry about getting high quality sleep while on your business trip. Sometimes it just takes a scent or feel of home to help you drift into sleep and stay asleep throughout the night. If you have a favorite pillow or blanket that you always sleep with at home, this tip may be even more valuable to you. Bring it along and see if it does the magic trick.

2. Keep yourself awake on the plane.

If you have a long flight and get in a nap, you may feel rested when you get off the plane, but you will also feel too rested to fall asleep when you get to your hotel room. If you are not going right into a long day of business meetings immediately after getting off the plane, keep yourself awake. This will ensure that you are very tired and ready to sleep when you arrive in that hotel room.

3. Watch what you eat and drink before going to your room.

In the second half of your day, stay awake from foods and drinks that have a lot of sugar or caffeine. Also stay away from foods or drinks that tend to give you gas or other stomach problems. This will avoid a lot of the disturbances that might keep you awake during the night, or which might wake you up continually after falling asleep.

4. Request hotel rooms that you are familiar with from other business trips.

This will not be possible on your first trip, but it is a valuable trip for those who go on frequent business trips. Rather than just taking whatever room you are assigned, try to request the same hotel room every time you visit a particular hotel. These frequently requested rooms will start to feel more familiar to you, and it will be easier to fall asleep in them. It may help to keep a journal of different hotels in different locations and all of the rooms you have stayed in. You can easily refer to this book whenever you are booking a hotel room, so you know you are getting familiar rooms.

5. Bring someone to keep you company.

Lonely hotel rooms are difficult to sleep in. Bring someone along to keep the bed warm, and you may find it a bit easier to sleep peacefully.

Business trips can leave you exhausted, but it doesn't have to be that way. With a bit of thought, your next trip can be more rewarding.
