The Pirates of Penzance
One of the most frequently played Gilbert and Sullivan opera's is The Pirates of Penzance, a light comedy opera. The official premiere was on the 31st December 1879 in Fifth Avenue Theatre, New York and was an immediate hit. Its first London production was on the 3rd April 1880 at the Opera Comique. There have been several modernised productions of The Pirates of Penzance since then, including Joseph Papp's 1981 production on Broadway.
The cast contains hopelessly good hearted pirates, lovely young maidens and a team of hopeless but lovable cops. A sequence of daft mistakes take place within the plot, turning lives upside down.
The key character of the plot is a young man called Frederic, who due to a hard of hearing nursemaidnamed Ruth, is a reluctant pirates apprentice. On his 21st Birthday, Frederic is celebrating and drinking sherry with the Pirates, when he shocks them by announcing that he plans to leave them. Ruth, now the pirates maid, tells everyone that as Frederic's former nursemaid when he was a small boy, she made a terrible error. She misheard Frederic's Father when he told her to arrange an apprenticeship with a ships pilot due to her poor hearing and instead apprenticed him to a pirate.
Frederic appeals to the pirate king and his crew to leave with him to pursue a more respectable existence, but he is not successful. Frederic makes some suggestions to the pirates to help them avoid regularly getting beaten and achieve a little more success in their ventures. One important gem of advice is to not believe everyone who claims to be an orphan is being honest as their weakness for orphans is widely known.
Ruth is determined to marry Frederic and once they leave, she manages to convince Frederic that she is extremely beautiful. Frederic is convinced she is telling him the truth and believes what she says. At that point, some beautiful maidens come along and Ruth's deception is unveiled. Frederic realises that Ruth is 'plain and old' and she leaves in total despair. Frederic attempts to alert the young maidens that there are pirates close by and he and Mabel, a daughter of the Major General Stanley, promptly.
Shortly, Ruth and the pirate king return to inform Frederic that he has not finished his apprenticeship and cannot leave His apprenticeship states that Frederic can only leave once he has reached the age of 21, but because he was born on the 29th of February he has only had a birthday each leap year. This means that in order to reach his 21st birthday, Frederic must return to the pirates for another whopping 63 years! Mabel promises she will wait for Frederic. His sense of duty makes him feel he has no choice but to return.
The play is a funny comedy opera and a Victorian classic. Its popularity has lasted for over one hundred and thirty years.
