Living The Indian life In An Islamic World
The Middle East has become a hotbed of investment and opportunity for many Indians. While some countries in the Middle East have openly embraced Indians and their culture, many retain their religious beliefs and customs. Because of the fear instilled by a few Islamic zealots, many fear going to the Middle East and other Islamic countries.
In reality, Islam as a religion is tolerant as many of their teachings propagate peace and prosperity for their own families. The following are some tips regarding Indians living in Islamic countries.
Listen to your Embassy Officers. Your home country's embassy would provide advisories as to the proper decorum when living in the Islamic country. Do follow the instructions provided by the consular officers so as not to violate local customs or offend religious beliefs. Also, be knowledgeable on who to contact and where to go when problems about security or other matters arise.
Read on the situation on the ground. It is best to find out the current situation on the ground through news sources and other information portals. If you have friends or family in the host country, ask the standard of living, security concerns and other daily matters to prepare you and your family on your eventual stay on the ground.
Respect Customs. This is a sticking point for many expats when in the foreign country. It is best to follow what is observed in the country. This includes the five time daily prayer as well as the customs and dress in the country. In addition, religious celebrations need to be observed especially Ramadan and other holidays. Public displays of affection also need to be kept at a minimum in order to respect the teachings of the Koran.
Be Low-Key. Since you may be practicing your own religion, it would be best to practice it indoors and in low-key manners. Since the majority of your neighbors do not share your religion, you need to be wary of offending religious beliefs because after all you are a foreigner in a foreign country. Being low key can help keep your peace from zealots or other religious officials.
In essence, the way for an Indian to thrive in an Islamic setting is being respectful of their beliefs, following your country's consular officials, being low key and being prepared. Do see that your life ahead may involve many adjustments and it is best that you do that with a smile. Not only would you be earning a living, you would be enriching your life by thriving in a new environment and setting.
