A resort is a facility often used for recreation or relaxation. These places usually attract visitors for vacations or holidays. They may be towns, commercial establishments, or places operated by a company.

Resort towns are towns are usually where vacationing or tourism is a major local activity. When these facilities are located near the sea, they are called seaside. Inland facilities may include mountain, or ski resorts, or spa towns. Self-contained commercial establishments also fall under this category of facilities. These establishments aim to provide all needs, such as entertainment, sports, lodging, drink, food, and shopping, of the vacationer on the premise. Hotels are a main feature of these places and usually provide amenities, recreational activities and entertainment.

Seaside facilities are on a coast. Many of these seaside towns have a popular nightlife with cinemas, theaters, pubs, bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. These entertainment facilities often cater to locals. Ski vacation places in Europe are villages or towns in ski areas that offer ski schools, equipment rental, ski lifts, and hotels and chalets.

Destination places contain, in and within themselves, guest attractions. These facilities do not rely on nearby towns, theme parks, historic sites or other attractions to bring in people. Food, drink, shopping, entertainment, sports, and lodging are all offered at these destination facilities, so there is no need to leave during a stay. Generally they offer higher quality amenities than what would be found in a town or at a hotel.

All-inclusive facilities, in addition to providing common amenities of a resort, charge a fixed price inclusive of all or most items. At minimum, they offer unlimited food and drink, lodging, sports, and entertainment. This type of facility is often found in the Caribbean, specifically Cuba.

Spa facilities offer short-term lodging. Their main purpose is to provide individual services for clients to help with development of healthy habits. These places may be located near natural hot springs or sources of mineral waters. During a week of stay, a customer may be involved in a program that includes spa services, wellness education, healthy cuisine, physical fitness activities, and special interest programs. Golf vacation places, as their name suggests, are focused around golf.

Luxury vacation places are an expensive facility, usually one that has been rated with five stars. They offer various attractions for visitors. A megaresort is a form of destination facility that is large in size and may include a large-scale attraction such as casino, theme park, or golf course. The facilities located along the Las Vegas Strip fall under this category because of their complexity and size. Holiday camps and villages are self-contained facilities. In Europe, holiday villages offer accommodation in villas. In the United Kingdom, holiday camps offer accommodations in chalets.

Resorts are a place for people to enjoy relaxation and recreation. There are many different types of these facilities. They may be self-contained and offer everything that a customer may need within their facilities or located near towns or public attractions where people can roam around. Vacationers frequent these places, especially during holiday seasons. Though locals may patronize some of their attractions.
