If you're getting towards the end of your studies, you'll no doubt be considering what to do next. With debts to repay, your thoughts will understandably turn towards a world of jobs, paying the bills and generally joining the rat race. However, there are lots of very good reasons to postpone the inevitable and take some time out to travel the world before embarking on a career.

1) You may never get the chance again
That might sound a bit dramatic, but as you get older life gets more complicated. Taking a year off from your job is something that's not easy to do and although some companies offer sabbaticals, it's unlikely to be for more than a few months. Also, once you enter the world of mortgages and possibly kids, the chance to take a year off to take a round the world trip goes from difficult to nearly impossible. You could always wait for retirement but life doesn't come with any guarantees so make sure you don't have any regrets.

2) Enhance your CV or UCAS application
Employers and universities are looking for candidates that stand out. Doing some voluntary work as part of your round the world trip is not only a very rewarding experience, it will also look great on your CV or UCAS application. It shows that you're not afraid to try things outside your normal comfort zone and will also give you some excellent transferable skills. Employers and universities tend to look favourably on gap years in general, but particularly if you do something constructive with your time.

3) Gain experience and build confidence
Travelling the world will mean that at times you'll need to be self reliant and you'll face challenges that need to be overcome. It's a great way to gain experience and you're likely to return from your trip a much more confident and mature person that when you left.

4) Time to reflect
Taking a year off gives you lots of time to think about your future to make certain that the course or career you have chosen is the right one for you. It also means that when you do start your course or career, you're more likely to be focused and committed, rather than wondering what you're missing out on.

5) Have the time of your life
Everyone who does a round the world Gap Year has their own unique experience but they all have one of the greatest experiences of their lives!
